Looking Back on the 2024 Colours of the Year

December 2, 2024

Fall is here, and 2024 is coming to a close. Many of our customers have completed renovations this year, and some of their projects used some of this year’s most current design trends.

It won’t be long until the top colours of 2025 are decided by the “powers that be” in paint, but we still wanted to highlight the 2024 paint colours of the year.

Update: Our guide to the 2025 colours of the year has published!

Keep an eye out for these shades the next time you visit a friend’s home or find inspiration on Instagram’s Discover page.

This article will delve into colour theory, which is the study of how colours work together to affect our emotions and perceptions. Although it may sound complicated, colour theory is fairly intuitive, and something the average homeowner can use to make design decisions. To learn more, read our blog post on the basics of colour theory.

Read on to get inspired for your next painting project. We are pretty proud of some of our recent interior jobs, which showcase today’s design trends. You can see these for yourself on the Pro Works Instagram account

Sherwin-Williams - Upward SW 6239

Sherwin-Williams calls Upward SW 6239 a “denim blue with gray undertones” leaving the viewer “dreamily adrift in the stratosphere.” This light neutral shade pairs well with a cool pastel, white furnishings, and coastal or Nordic design styles.

Sue Wadden, the Director of Color Marketing at Sherwin-Williams shared the inspiration that went into selecting this colour, and how it fits into the trend of blues and greens defining the current decade in this blog post

“Used as an accent or all over, in classic coastal or casual Nordic styles, the airy, misty-hued beauty dwells where the fairest-weather blue finds just a hint of silver lining. Additionally, the commercial appeal of pale blue hues resonates widely, manifesting in furniture, lighting, textiles, and accessories in ranges that seamlessly blend aesthetics and functionality. I can see this color used everywhere!” - Sue Wadden, Director of Color Marketing at Sherwin-Williams

Benjamin Moore - Blue Nova CC-860

Violet and blue come together in a mid-tone that Benjamin Moore describes as “elevated and sumptuous” with a “cosmic vibe that encourages adventure.” The Blue Nova profile page includes a neat feature showing the shade in different light, including morning, afternoon, and night.
